A Summer to Remember - Vasal Education Students at Alma College

As part of Vasal Education’s strategic focus on global academic readiness and international education, 14 high-performing students from its three flagship schools embarked on an enriching journey to the United States. These learners had the privilege to visit the prestigious Alma College, Michigan – a two-week immersive learning experience that broadened their academic and cultural horizons.

Situated in scenic Mid-Michigan and deeply rooted in Scottish heritage, Alma College is a compelling blend of history and modern education. Its serene campus environment, coupled with its innovative teaching practices, provided the perfect setting for a transformative summer school programme. The experience was meticulously curated to help students learn new skills, explore new cultures and gain a taste of real campus life.

A Warm Welcome to Global Learning

The students began their journey by settling into Gelston Hall, one of the residential facilities on campus. Their first week was a carefully designed balance of academic pursuits and recreational exploration. Mornings were filled with interactive classes led by international education experts and faculty members. Subjects included the fast-growing domains of Data Science and AI, Legal History and Innovation and Neuropsychology – fields that encouraged critical thinking and global awareness.

Afternoons offered workshops and group projects that challenged students to apply classroom theories to real-world problems. In the evenings, students enjoyed American campus life experiences like movie nights, sports tournaments, trivia competitions and the much-enjoyed Glow Party. These activities provided a relaxed yet engaging way to bond with peers and faculty, enhancing the sense of community and cross-cultural understanding.

Cultural Exposure and Local Adventures

The weekend was anything but ordinary. Students ventured off campus for exciting field visits. Stops included Serendipity and Block House, two local hotspots offering a glimpse into American youth culture through experiences like e-sports and dodgeball. Another highlight was a nature excursion along the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail, a scenic path connecting Alma and Greenville. This mix of recreational and educational experiences added a unique cultural depth to the programme, fulfilling the core intent of immersive learning and international education.

Academic Excellence Meets Social Growth

The second week elevated the programme’s impact with a more rigorous schedule. Students took part in profile-building sessions, resume-writing workshops and a tour of Alma College‘s academic departments. A key experience was their visit to the Human Cadaver Lab, an eye-opening lesson in the complexity of human biology and medical science.

Afternoons were spent working on project presentations and participating in an application boot camp, which provided practical guidance on preparing for higher studies abroad. Evenings remained socially charged, with activities like ice cream socials, open-air barbecues and themed dinners, offering a taste of traditional and contemporary American college life.

Throughout the week, international students from various countries joined in, further amplifying the cultural exchange component. Bonfires, art sessions, campfires by the Pine River and even events like Water Wars helped reinforce the value of interpersonal growth through campus life immersion.

Personalised Guidance for Global Futures

A defining element of this summer school programme was the focused one-on-one academic and career counselling sessions. These allowed each student to map out their future goals with precision, gaining insights on international college admissions processes, essay writing and profile development.

The final stretch of the programme featured a culmination of all efforts – students completed their final assignments, delivered insightful project presentations and celebrated each other’s achievements during the awards night. The group also had a fun-filled shopping trip to Mt. Pleasant, marking a light-hearted end to an otherwise rigorous and eye-opening educational journey.
